Building the Collection

by Stacy Brown

In many ways, the library collection is the foundation of the school library program. From all the stuff you have in your collection—and the system for organizing and using it—librarians construct and teach lessons, provide reference, offer recreational reading, and design loads of activities and events. To make all that possible, you build the collection in an ongoing way, usually in a cycle of formalized exercises and day-to-day interactions. Lessons include:

  1. Introduction [1:33]
  2. Evaluation and Management of the Collection [6:11]
  3. Community Analysis and Needs Assessment [6:28]
  4. Curriculum Mapping as a Tool [5:54]
  5. Selection Policies and Procedures [7:53]
  6. Selection Tools [5:28]
  7. Acquisitions and Processing [5:40]
  8. The eBook Collection [6:47]
  9. Closing [1:11]
